JUDY WOODRUFF: Our economics correspondent, Paul Solman, has been trying to figure out how the world of online and especially competitive video games, known as e-sports, are changing the media industry. Tonight, he brings you a look at the world of online video streaming. It's part of his weekly series, Making Sense this website.
PAUL SOLMAN: Hello, old mustached man. Hi. And with this pleasant, but sobering salutation, I was introduced to online streaming at DreamHack, a video gaming convention in Austin, Texas, where I got to experience a new profession now mesmerizing millions worldwide, for better and worse. Let's start with the bright side. An upbeat onliner whose nom de stream is AnnieFuchsia. She showed me the ropes. Look. Look at that one. ANNIEFUCHSIA, Twitch Streamer: Oh, he knows your name? PAUL SOLMAN: Paul Solman is a legend. ANNIEFUCHSIA: He knows you. PAUL SOLMAN: The tingle of a blatant buttering-up aside, what's not to like about communicating with hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of people worldwide in a heartbeat? ANNIEFUCHSIA: I think, for most people, they hear us after two to three seconds. PAUL SOLMAN: Tell us who you are and how old you are. ANNIEFUCHSIA: Yes. You can tell us, for example, what country you're from. PAUL SOLMAN: Germany, Netherlands, Nigeria, Ireland, Norway, Scotland. Oh, my -- really? It's amazing, and everybody just responds. In an age where more and more people consume video online, and especially more and more young people, streaming is the Internet's version of live TV, but with instant feedback. The streamers are the stars. An incomprehensible way to make a living, you think? Hey, Annie didn't know how to tell her own parents, until: ANNIEFUCHSIA: They started becoming suspicious because they're like, what, you have traveled to the U.S. twice this year, and before this year you had never been to the U.S. because it was too expensive. And my dad got so concerned because I couldn't tell him why. So he's like, are you dealing with drugs? (LAUGHTER) ANNIEFUCHSIA: And he had a -- like, he had a serious talk with me, like, sit down on the couch, let's talk about this. And that's when I told them. PAUL SOLMAN: That -- and they were dumbfounded? ANNIEFUCHSIA: Well, he was confused still, but at least he wasn't worried, like, in a safety, legal way. (LAUGHTER) PAUL SOLMAN: Now she streams upwards of 10 hours a day to build audience, playing a variety of video games. Streaming superstar DrDisRespect, who focuses on battle royal games, puts in similar hours. Here at DreamHack in Austin, in a section devoted to streamers, fans lined up to get a glimpse of, and maybe even selfie with, Guy Beahm. The good doctor has 2.5 million followers on Twitch TV, the YouTube of video gaming. So what exactly is streaming? A continuous live video online feed to anyone who wants to log in and watch. Some streamers stream whatever they're doing, say, watching and commenting on the World Cup. But many play video games, most recently, threat hottest game in town, "Fortnite." Streaming viewership is surging. Last year, there were more than two million active streamers on Twitch each month. And all told, viewers spent nearly six billion hours tuning in. Amazon purchased Twitch for almost a billion dollars back in 2014. And virtually every social media platform, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, now offers streaming services. KRISTEN VALNICEK, KittyPlays: After my very first stream, I'm like, wow, this can be a career. PAUL SOLMAN: Really? Right away? KRISTEN VALNICEK: Right away. Yes, I was like, this is big. Why is nobody treating this like a business yet? PAUL SOLMAN: That was way back in 2013. Now 26, Kristen Valnicek streams under the name KittyPlays. Valnicek dropped out of college, and skipped a law career to grow a fan base that now tops 850,000, making her one of the 100 streamers on Twitch. KRISTEN VALNICEK: It's kind of a learned art. As you practice and as you get into it, you can become really talented at playing, shooting -- mid-kill, you can look up and see your chat and respond, oh, hey, Greg, good to see you again, or something like that. PAUL SOLMAN: Like many pro streamers, Valnicek makes her living online, a very good one, up there with the streamers earning six-figure incomes. But -- and you have surely been wondering this since we began -- how? KRISTEN VALNICEK: So the foundation, I think, for Twitch streamers is from donations and subscriptions, and then like some sprinkling of ad revenue and sponsorships as well. PAUL SOLMAN: Let's break that down: Subscribers are fans who pay a monthly fee, $5 to $25, and in return get some perks, like special emojis they can use in chats. Last month, Valnicek made nearly $6,500 from her subscribers, a cut going to the streaming company Twitch. KRISTEN VALNICEK: Thank you so much. PAUL SOLMAN: Then there are donations. That's the bulk of her income, which can come thousands of dollars at a time. And Valnicek is not alone. YouTube is full of videos of other streamers receiving donations of $10,000, even $20,000 at a pop. In exchange, streamers give shout-outs, acknowledging donors by name. KRISTEN VALNICEK: I want them to feel appreciated and know how excited I am that, like, they want like my content enough and want to support it. PAUL SOLMAN: Do you pay attention more to people who donate more? KRISTEN VALNICEK: Yes and no. PAUL SOLMAN: Meaning sometimes. But what prompts the donations? KING OSIE'EL, DreamHack Attendee: Every now and then, I will just stop by and drop money, because I feel like she deserves it. She deserves every bit she gets. PAUL SOLMAN: King Osie'el donates to a number of streamers, including KittyPlays. So, do you feel an obligation? Like, is it... KING OSIE'EL: No, it's not an obligation. It's just that I love her as a streamer. And I do it because I love her as a streamer. PAUL SOLMAN: And what do you get out of it? KING OSIE'EL: Just seeing her happy. She makes us happy all the time, so I think that it was my turn to be like, here's something to make you happy. JACOB WIEDOWER, DreamHack Attendee: It's like it's no different than paying to see a comedian or so -- I, guess, more accurately, someone playing guitar on the street. PAUL SOLMAN: Jacob Wiedower, another streaming devotee who also has a channel on Twitch. JACOB WIEDOWER: They're obviously trying to make a living doing what they love. And so you want to help them out. And you definitely want to see them succeed in what they're doing. PAUL SOLMAN: OK, so far, so good, if also so inscrutable to many my age. But we began by also promising the bad, the dark side of streaming, harassment toward female streamers, for example, like Kristen Valnicek. KRISTEN VALNICEK: They come in and they're like, you're trash at the game. What are you doing on this Web site? Dah, dah, dah, dah, dah. PAUL SOLMAN: That is, what are women doing playing a man's, or boy's, game? Streamer AnnieFuchsia said she too has been harassed, after people found her home address online, and asked that we not use her real name. Then there's swatting, where a viewer calls to the police to falsely report a serious incident at someone's home. Streamers have often been targets. Heavily armed SWAT teams sometimes arrive. Of course the internet is also famous for instances of racism, and sexual harassment. KittyPlays site has built a community of good-will, good vibes. PAUL SOLMAN: But isn't there the problem that it's echo chambers, like, you know neo-Nazis, for example, who could all find... KRISTEN VALNICEK: Each other, yes. PAUL SOLMAN: ... neo-Nazis and now feel empowered because they're not alone? KRISTEN VALNICEK: Yes. Oh, 100 percent. And I don't think it is dangerous for the mindful, but I think it can be if you're not told or are aware that this is even a process that's happening. PAUL SOLMAN: Still, Valnicek has no plans of unplugging, especially because, as a woman whose forte is "Fortnite," she's something of a pioneer in a world long dominated by young men. So, yes, streaming has its dark side, but, look, many streamers are a lot more like the Roger Federer of "Fortnite," Ninja, with nine million followers, KittyPlays, or our friend AnnieFuchsia. They all play video games all day, every day, for fun and profit. For the "PBS NewsHour," this is economics correspondent Paul Solman, reporting from Austin, Texas, and cyberspace. JUDY WOODRUFF: And one postscript to Paul's report. ESPN and Disney have just signed a deal for live TV coverage -- yes, actual TV -- of an e-sports league. It's the first time that that type of gaming will be shown live in prime time, starting later this month. For students looking for exciting new learning environments away from their familiar home universities, foreign exchange student programs offer excellent opportunities to increase your exposure to different academic and cultural environments. Foreign exchange programs are made possible through bilateral agreements between two or more universities to host students from the partner university for a fixed duration.
While there have been student exchange traditions between various universities for a long time now, with an increasing interest in other cultures, several more universities are signing agreements for student exchange programs. Hence it is most likely than not, if you are enrolled in a good university, chances are that your university already has or is contemplating foreign exchange student programs for its students. Before you apply for any exchange program, you must understand the requirements and purpose of such programs. You must be interested in learning about new cultures and practices you are likely to encounter while on foreign exchange student programs. They require students to spend time at a university in a country and location away from their own home culture in the hope that this will help them understand the host culture better, absorb the best practices from the host universities, and relay it back to their own universities. If you can `t learn something, you canuse essay help online. Academic commitment and diligence are essential for students wishing to be included in foreign exchange student programs. This is important not only for selection into the program but also to make your stay at the host university fruitful. There is often a screening process by host universities to select bright students with a good academic record. While on a foreign exchange student program you are expected to contribute to the new learning environment and you cannot do it there if you didn’t do it at home. However, these contributions need not always be academic as any talent you might have at music, language, art, etc. could be useful while in a different culture. Since many foreign exchange student programs insist on knowledge of the language they teach in, it is a good idea to enroll for foreign language classes as you prepare for your stay in a foreign country. This will ensure that you are able to move about relatively more freely, travel to nearby places of interest, and experience the culture there more fully. Your financial and insurance position will become crucial while you are on foreign exchange student programs. You must ensure you are fully covered for health risks for your own peace of mind. Home universities often cover or share costs of travel, stay and insurance. You could also consider applying for stipends or educational loans to meet unexpected costs you might encounter. Thus, for bright and enthusiastic students, foreign exchange student programs are a great way to make new friends and give you exposure to international trends in your discipline. A Great Horned Owl blends in with the trees it lives in.
This Grey Squirrel also blends with the trees where it lives. One of things I find fun and educational is spending time in the outdoors, observing and photographing the marvels nature has to offer. In the animal kingdom are those which are brightly colored as well as those which are subdued or camouflaged. In nature, survival is crucial for the continuation of the species. Being unseen in plain view is nature’s way of achieving just that. Whether it is birds, squirrels or deer, each has been given a color scheme uniquely their own that provides them protection. Animals that spend a great deal of time in the open use both their color and the time of day to better protect themselves from detection. Owls hunt at night; during the day they perch in trees, where their feathers have a similar texture and coloration to that of tree bark. Deer love to graze in open meadows and fields, yet this makes them vulnerable to predators. Deer depend on their color as well as the time of day to protect them. Evenings offer the best protection; When the sun is low their tan-gray coloration lets them blend in well with their grass and woodland habitat. A herd of Deer emerge from the woods and onto the prairie. A herd of Deer emerge from the woods and onto the prairie as the sun sets. Take this turkey (left) as it makes its way through the brush, trying to elude me as I try to capture its picture. Its dark color blends in with the shadows as well as the trees and bushes. An animal that continues to feel threatened in the shadows, will escape by running or like the turkey on the right, take flight. So, the next time you take a walk through the woods or an open field, take a few minutes to look around to see what is really there. You might be surprised at the wildlife hiding in plain sight, wildlife that you’d never notice with just a casual glance. Making maple syrup
It’s maple sugar time in Wisconsin and other northern states. Maple sap begins to flow in the spring, while nights still dip below freezing, but daytime temperatures push into the 40’s. Maple syrup festivals abound this time of year. Attending one or visiting a local sugar shack provides you an excellent opportunity to satisfy your sweet tooth, learn how maple syrup is made, and spend some quality time outdoors with your family. Besides, my good friend, a professional cv writer recommended me to write about my hobbies in my resume. I found a good cook job thanks to his advice. Bob and Janet Hansen of Atkinson, New Hampshire, turned an interest in maple syrup production into an old-fashioned, educational hobby. With their property lined by mature Sugar Maple trees, all they needed was instruction and basic maple syruping supplies. Now, with just 10 tapped trees and working out of their garage, they produce enough syrup for friends and family. Even 10 taps are a lot of work. Consider that it takes about 40 gallons of sap to make just one gallon of syrup. Expect about five weeks of consistent effort, beginning when the sap starts to flow. Janet says, “It’s a small price to pay, though, for the wonderful taste of pure homemade maple syrup.” All Clues Lead to the Letterbox One of the many reasons we began Educational Hobbies Blog was to learn about new hobbies … new to us, anyway. Each author has children, two have grandchildren. It’s fun to stumble across new things we can do with the kids and/or enjoy as adults. Today, I stumbled across an interesting hobby called “letterboxing,” where you follow written clues to find hidden treasure. Letterboxing describes the hobby as “an intriguing pastime combining navigational skills and rubber stamp artistry in a charming ‘treasure hunt’ style outdoor quest.” It’s an international hobby where “placers” hide small, waterproof containers that hold a rubber stamp and a log book. Letterboxes are hidden in trees and under rocks in public locations. You’ll need to take the obvious precautions as you turn over rocks and poke around in underbrush. Let’s not mar the fun with a snake or spider bite. They don’t come in a standard shape or size; some are no larger than a film canister; frequently they’re small Rubbermaid containers. Any smallish container with a tight fitting lid is a potential letterbox. You bring your own ink pad, personalized rubber stamp, and logbook on a letterboxing hunt. Depending on the particular instructions you’re following, you may also need a simple compass. When you find your treasure, you stamp the enclosed log book, possibly also signing your name and general location. Then you stamp your personal log book with the stamp from the letterbox as a record of your find. It’s that simple, yet it builds skills related to navigation and observation. I’m going to give it a try this week. What about you? Is this this the first you’ve heard of letterboxing? Please leave a comment and share your experience. |
